6th Grade Artists 2011/2012

6th grade artists just completed a printmaking unit.  Inspired by snowflakes, they designed their own stamps using the concept of radial design.  They carved the rubber stamps to create their design in relief.

They began by making simple black and white prints:

Next, artists learned how to create a "rainbow roll", combining ink colors with the brayers:

Finally, they created pillows by printing on felt and sewing them together using the blanket stitch.

Students viewed several examples of Mexican amate paintings. Traditional amate paper is created from tree bark. We created our own, similar, surface by distressing recycled craft paper. We studied the color palette, the decorative elements and the stylized depictions of birds and nature in the traditional paintings. 6th grade artists worked from photographs of birds to create these unique compositions.
