After studying a variety of Impressionist painters, middle schools artists learned techniques for painting with acrylic paints.  Each student chose a photograph of a landscape, seascape, or cityscape to inspire their painting.

Weaving Blog Stars 2009/2010

Backstrap weaving is a symbol of the life of the Mayan woman. With the loom strapped around her waist and the other end tied to a tree or post the weaver is an integral part of the loom. Thus, she is vitally connected to the nature around her and becomes one with her environment.

Mrs. Mentzer taught 7th & 8th graders this ancient art using handmade harnesses and warps tied to the table legs, creating some of the beautiful examples of cloth below.

Middles school artists used burlap to experiment with different weaving and stitching techniques.  They created these samplers and mounted them.

Glass Fusing & Wearable Art Blog Stars 2009/2010

Our students are really enjoying the glass kiln and the new glass fusing projects. In March we sold glass jewelry to raise almost $800 for Haiti earthquake relief! Way to go middle school artists. Another gorgeous fused glass creation:

These bird silkscreens will become part of an art installation that will be unveiled at our Propel East Arts Festival May 14, 2010! We will post pictures of the finished product.

Middle school artists also used their new silk screening skills to raise money for Cystic Fibrosis. At a fundraiser on March 4th we sold tee shirts with original designs printed on them. According to the Cystic Fibrosis foundation "65 Roses" is what some children with cystic fibrosis (CF) call their disease because the words are much easier for them to pronounce. This inspired the design below.

Glass Fusing, Jewelry Design and Wearable Art Blog Stars 2009/2010

Middle school artists have been learning to use our new glass-fusing kiln! Students learned how to carefully cut glass using many new tools. These first jewelry designs wowed us all!

Before we got into the glass fusing, we warmed up to jewelry making with polymer clay. Most artists focused on jewelry but this artist found his own niche creating these mini animals. Yes, that is a DJ octopus!

We've just begun a unit on silkscreening. Middles school artists are working on a 2 color bird print on fabric. Stay tuned -the many cool bird prints will soon be a new art installation in our school! We'll be sure to post some pics here on the blog.
