Painting is so much fun!

For the past few weeks there has been a whole lot of painting going on in Studio 101.  All of the following paintings were created using tempera-cakes.  Tempera cakes are a bit easier to manage in the classroom than liquid tempera paint. But they are also more opaque and brighter than watercolors.

Kindergarten artists painted backgrounds for their Pezzetino-inspired creatures. I am in the process of posting these completed artworks on Artsonia, as soon as I do I will post a link here.

"The One Who Runs Really Fast"
"The One with the Big Horn on His Nose"

After the Pezzetino project, it was clear the Kinders wanted more painting!  So we read this book to get loosened up! (Thanks for the recommendation Brianna Haenel, 5th grade artist.)  THen we learned about "abstract" art and focused on painting colors and shapes.

It is very interesting to me the many different takes on "abstract."

Cassidy paints thoughtfully.
Shiyan's abstract painting - I love the bold colors!
Kaelyn created a very linear and symmetrical composition.
I love how Jason connected all his shapes and colors.

First grade artists in Ms. Cain's class also had a day of abstract painting...

This week, second grade artists began a unit on LINE and they got to paint too!

Studio 101 NEWS

What’s up
in Studio 101?
New this year:
Freaky Fridays – On Fridays, artists in grades 1-8 will start their art class looking at some very unique contemporary art from around the world.  We will focus our discussions on non-traditional art materials, public art and ingenious ideas!

En EspaƱol – With Senorita Warner sharing our space in Studio 101, the first trimester will include a focus on Hispanic art and artists.  Each grade level will complete one project that dives a little deeper into Latino and Hispanic cultures.  Right now 3rd graders are learning about poet Pablo Neruda and creating an art project that combines poetry and an appreciation for nature...ask them about it!  This excellent book was our inspiration:

ARTSmart with the Winter Concert 12/13/12 – Propel East’s own artist market!  This year the ARTSmart will be the same evening as the Winter Concert.  All artists in grades 5-8 are invited to sell their original, handmade artwork – and keep the proceeds!  More information will be sent home in October.

Here is the latest handpainted rock by an artist who was a part of our Artist Market last year - 5th grader Brianna!  She brought some work into to share with me just last week...this one is called "Golden Pizza"! LOL!

Back By Popular Demand:
CMP Collaboration - 1st grade artists will once again be a part of the exciting collaboration between Propel Schools and the Children’s Museum of Pittsburgh.  We will have several field trips throughout the year and Ms. Babusci, Ms. Thompson and Ms. Cain will create an interdisciplinary curriculum that teaches art, literacy and science in a unique and hands-on way in our classrooms and at the museum!

Art Club – When PEAK starts up again, 7-8 grade artists can sign up for Art Club on Thursdays.  We will work on painting murals again as well as creating unique artworks for the December ARTSmart and the backdrop for the Winter Concert.

The Blog - www.propelstudio101.blogspot.com - Our blog continues to feature the weekly art vocabulary, special announcements and photos of our East artists at work. You can also find a link to our blog on the “STUDIO 101” FACEBOOK page.

Artsonia Online Gallery and Shop - www.artsonia.com - In our second year, we will again post photos of artists work on this worldwide online gallery of children’s art.  But the best part is you can buy high-quality gifts featuring your child’s artwork and it is also a fundraiser for our studio!  Look for more information in Friday Folders in October.

Welcome Back to Studio 101!

...or should I say...

Bienvenida Estudio de Arte - Uno Cero Uno!

Help!  Here's the pronunciation:
estudio (a stoo deeo) de arte (day artay)
uno (oo-no) cero (say-ro) uno (oo-no)

Art Studio en Espanol

We have a new roomie in our studio - Please welcome Senorita Warner!

In honor of her new presence, we will focus on Spanish and Latina art and artists in our first trimester.  This will not only provide another culture for our study and understanding but it will also reinforce what the students are learning with Senorita Warner in their classrooms.

We can look forward to art projects inspired by:

Frida Kahlo & Diego Rivera (Mexico)
Pablo Picasso, Joan Miro & Salvador Dali (Spain)
Vic Muniz (Brazil)
Latin American Folk Art
Aztec Art

In the second trimester we will focus on our 2013 Pennsylvania Super Sensational Artist.

In the third trimester we will have a focus on recycled, upcycled and "green" art and artists.

It's going to be a fantastic year!

Before & After

These pictures show Studio 101 after only 1 day of unpacking and organizing.  They are the "before" pictures.

This year's PSSA artist is...

Every year I try and convince my students that PSSA doesn't stand for Pennsylvania State Standardized Assessment but rather Pennsylvania Super Sensational Artist!  In years past we have learned about artists with Pennsylvania roots: Keith Haring, Alexander Calder and Romare Bearden.  Last year I realized after learning about three male artists who are all deceased...we needed to learn about a female artist who was currently making art in PA.  Therefore, in 2011, we studied the Pennsylvania Super Sensational ARTFORM of sewing and examined the PA Dutch quilting tradition, and the evolution of stitched art, with local artist, Wendy Osher.  www.wendyosher.net  Many of our East artists got to meet Wendy when she visited our school.  Ms. Babusci recently presented on the K-8, sewing-based lessons at the National Art Education Association convention in NYC.  So this year...presenting...

PENNSYLVANIA SUPER SENSATIONAL ARCHITECTURE

This year we are looking at Frank Lloyd Wright and his great architectural achievement, Fallingwater.  A beautiful house just an hour outside of Pittsburgh, in Bear Run, PA.  www.fallingwater.org

In every grade level, over the next 12 weeks, we will explore architecture.  Inspired by Frank Lloyd Wright's Fallingwater, and Ms. Babusci's residency work there last summer, we will learn together about architecture and explore it with a variety of media.

Please feel free to share ideas, thoughts and feedback here on the blog.   I will be posting about what we learn and the art we create.

We began our exploration of architecture by...playing...building...collaborating...

Calder in NYC

During my recent trip to New York I visited the Whitney Museum of American Art to see the Whitney Biennial 2012.  I was so excited to see the imaginative, amazing pieces of Calder's Circus on exhibit.  Do you remember our Pennsylvania Super Sensational Artist study of the 2008 2009 school year?  Alexander "Sandy" Calder is one of my all time favorites:

I am so proud to be a presenter at the 65th annual NAEA conference:

Please send an email to ababusci@propelschools.org if you have any questions or interest in this topic.

Happy New Year

Happy New Year!  OK, I am a little late...In 2012 I aim to figure out how to best utilize this blog.  Because Studio 101 student work is now posted on Artsonia it seems silly to duplicate that feature here.  (To view Propel East artworks on Artsonia www.artsonia.com, simply type in our school name)
One thought is to make this blog an area where I can showcase more photographs and explanations of students AT WORK.  Focus on our process, more than the final products.  It would allow me to share more about my practice as a teacher, our curriculum, and the resources and routines in our classroom studio.  I think this would make the blog more useful for fellow art educators and parents, but less useful for students.  It is a work in progress!

Our Studio is bursting at the seams with awesome art.
Some ambitious designers created the fashions on our manikans.  (Yes, that is how you spell it when referring to artist mannequins.  I just learned that from Ms. Neumeyer.)

Architecture Blocks

The Architecture Blocks are a favorite choice form the "art games" shelves...

Proud architects Jonathan & Cameron.
